What Type of Gasket Material Should Be Used With Gasoline?

When operating with systems and components that house and transport fluids, it is important that reliable seals are implemented to ensure that any leak is prevented. Gaskets are a common option for such needs, coming in the form of rubber components that are seated and compressed between two or more surfaces to deform and create a seal. When transporting or storing a fluid such as gasoline, it is crucial that one takes into account the types of gasket material that is used for the seal, as some materials may begin to break down and fail when interacting with gasoline. As the failure of a gasket can lead to dangers when fuel begins to leak, it is very important that the right material is relied on.

Whether a system features gasoline, diesel, or other forms of petroleum-based fuels, the gasket material will need to be compatible with fuel injectors and other fuel system components. The most common choice of material is nitrile, or Buna-N, that of which is a closed-cell sponge rubber that is resistant to gasoline, fuel, and various oil types. Closed-cell sponge rubber is a type of expanded synthetic rubber created through a process of using elastomeric treated withholding gas and a chemical blowing agent. With the manufacturing process for such materials, a soft sponge can be created and sliced as needed to create a correctly sized product for a given application.

While nitrile is the material of choice, there are other options such as those made from vegetable fibers with cork gasket papers. By impregnating the plant fiber with protein and glycerin binders, a robust gasket can be created. These gasket materials are often used in chemical, automotive, and petroleum applications alike. Depending on the fluid that will be present within a system, the gasket material can be treated in various ways to increase specific resistances.

For industrial or automotive applications, nitrile is the material of choice for gasket seals, oil handling hoses, grommets, transmission fluid seals, shock mounts, and much more. When nitrile is used for a carburetor gasket or aircraft hose gasket, it will require a specific grade to ensure optimal operations. The grade of nitrile may be affected in various ways, such as increasing the acrylonitrile content within the polymer for the means of bolstering oil resistance. While nitrile features a good resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons, acids, and bases, it is not suitable for acids and bases that have strong oxidizing effects. Furthermore, nitrile gasket materials work best when they are in an environment where temperatures remain within the range of -40 to 275 degrees Fahrenheit.
