How Well Do Various Aircraft Function With One Engine?

The engine is the heart of any plane, combusting fuel-and-air mixtures for the means of propulsion generation and powering systems. While early aircraft engines were fairly limited in their capabilities, newer assemblies easily allow most modern twin-engine models to take off and land with just a single powerplant. That being said, not all aircraft can optimally operate with a single engine, though many are designed to be piloted with just one in the instance of an emergency. In this blog, we will discuss how common aircraft function with just a single engine, allowing you to better understand their differences for safety.

A large number of small private planes are designed with a single engine, meaning that an immediate emergency landing would need to be executed in the case of an engine failure as no thrust or propulsion would be produced. Meanwhile, with a private plane that has multiple engines, one engine can fail while the other continues to function, giving the pilot more time to plan a safe landing.

Commercial aircraft are often able to remain safe in the instance of an engine failure due to the commonality of having more than one engine. Commercial aircraft are also required to fly in locations where landing areas are more common than not, unless they have ETOPS certification which allows them to operate 60 minutes away from the nearest airport or air strip. Military jets are the final common type of aircraft that we will discuss, and those that are twin-engine models have the capability to continue operation for a time after engine failure. Generally, military aircraft are expected to return to a military base or friendly territory when such an issue occurs.

While engine failure is never ideal for any type of aircraft, most designs ensure that enough power can be generated to offset the loss of one powerplant. Oftentimes, when one engine fails, the other will increase its thrust output for the means of making up for any speed loss. Nevertheless, the loss of thrust on one side will usually lead to the aircraft pivoting in the direction of the non-functioning engine, leading to increased handling difficulty as the pilot needs to avoid losing control. Additionally, many aircraft cannot maintain cruise altitude with a single engine. As such, pilots need to be highly trained in order to safely navigate an aircraft during an engine failure.

Depending on how the engine fails, the response may vary. For example, an engine that has caught on fire will require an immediate shutdown, and systems will often be in place for extinguishing flames. If the engine can be turned back on, the aircraft will move toward the nearest airport, while an emergency landing will be carried out if the engine is non-functional. Typically, an engine that has faced extensive damage where mitigation is not possible will cause the pilot to undertake an immediate emergency landing.
